Everyone feels stress at some point whether it be from the simplest of places such as dissatisfaction at work, relationship conflicts or politics. The issue here is when one bad day turns into a series – this is when stress becomes a larger issue.

Stress can certainty be a healthy part of our life; driving us to complete the tasks that we do. But when stress is impacting our daily life and daily functioning is when it’s important to seek some help or pay extra attention to it.

Below, are some common symptoms for an overstressed, over-worked person and here’s what to look out for.

  1. You have trouble focusing.
    1. Domino effect of work stress and under-performance if you aren’t seeking outlets for your stress and giving yourself enough headspace to decompress.
  2. You start skipping out on social or family events.
  3. You have difficulty sleeping.
  4. Your eating patterns become more irregular.
  5. You have a shorter fuse.
  6. You’re holding your stress in your body.

Ways to cope:

  1. Exercise:

Exercise is obviously important but your workouts don’t have to be your standard yoga class. Even parking further away, taking some time to do some stretching or breathing or going for a jog around the block will work.

  1. Set a routine:

Establish semi-regular lifestyle patterns so that it doesn’t enter any more chaos into your schedule.

  1. Stay connected socially:

We have a tendency to pull away and isolate when feeling overwhelmed, but social connection is healthy and important.

  1. Find ways to distract yourself:

Watching television or reading a mindless gossip magazine or something to get your mind concentrated on something else

  1. Meditate and focus on altering your thoughts:

Slowing down so that you’re more aware of your thoughts. Starting to meditate and paying more attention to your thoughts, will make it easier to notice the unhealthy ones.
