What do basketball, sneakers and cupcakes have in common? Well, quite a lot as it turns out. Nike’s latest design was inspired by NBA player Kevin Durant, aka ‘cupcake’, or as described on Nike’s website: “With a style of play as smooth as velvet, KD is known for having the most fluid game… forever motivated by the sweet taste of victory. At the end of the day, winning is all that matters and anything else is just icing on the cake”.

But as sweet as it may sound, there’s a bitter story lying beneath the sugary nickname. ‘cupcake’ was originally coined by Durant’s colleague Kendrick Perkins, who used it as a pejorative using this term to refer to ‘soft’ team players. Durant’s opponent, Russel Westbrook, has chosen to embrace that approach and named Durant the same way after dropping out from Oklahoma City Thunder team for Golden State Warriors.

Well, lucky for us… we’re here for fashion. The shoes are priced at $150 and now available in stores. They integrate ultra-responsive cushioning with Zoned Flyknit fabric which provides lightweight breath-ability, stretch and support for sock-like comfort and a locked-in feel.

In other words, SWEET.
