An institute that will educate a new generation of fashion lawyers, a completely new field of expertise, and help designers be more knowledgeable about the legal aspects of their potential business, is set to be launched on September 8th in New York City.

Institute of Fashion Law was created by Professor Susan Scafidi, who pretty much pioneered the field of fashion law and is the mastermind behind Counterfeit Chic, in partnership with the CFDA and its President Diane von Furstenberg.

Students will get a chance to learn and develop skills in areas of the law affecting the fashion industry, such as intellectual property, business and finance, international trade and government regulation, and consumer culture and civil rights. The institute also plans to facilitate internships with “some of the world’s best-known fashion houses”, as the it’s prospectus puts it.

“I want to see that field of law established so that it becomes a standard part of the legal repertoire,” Prof. Scafidi tells The Cut. “I want to educate an entire generation of lawyers. And I want to make sure that the fashion-design community has a place to go to educate itself, and to be sure it’s getting the right advice when it comes to legal issues.”
