Paco Rabanne 1969 Iconic Handbag

Comme des Garçons teamed up with Paco Rabanne to reintroduce Rabanne’s iconic 1969 chain-mail bag. The line includes the 1969 bag done in materials like stingray, horn, metal, vegetal and glitter leathers and suede. The new handbags will retail for $1,400 to $2,200 beginning January.

Of course it wouldn’t be a collaboration if the relaunch didn’t include three additional reinterpretations by Rei Kawakubo that will retail exclusively at Comme des Garçons.

This handbag line is only the first step of Paco Rabanne’s master plan – relaunching the Paco Rabanne fashion house which was shuttered in 2006.

Paco Rabanne is an iconic 60’s fashion designer known for using, what one would call, unconventional materials. A Google image search on Paco Rabanne will reveal a myriad of metal plate mini dresses, head pieces and handbags. The 1969 bag itself was a clever answer to Coco Chanel labeling him a metalworker. The original bag was made out of links used for lavatory chains at the time.
