Karl Lagerfeld dubbed his latest 2011 Pirelli calendar “Mythology”, with Julianne Moore as Zeus’ wife Hera. Lagerfeld photographed the 36 black-and-white nude images in his Paris studio with each of those being a different ancient Rome and Greece reference. Of the theme Lagerfeld said, “Nobody believes in these gods anymore but the girls in the Pirelli calendar are the goddesses of today.”
Incidentally, among the 15 female models photographed for the calendar was the Dutch model Lara Stone who recently sued French Playboy for publishing an old nude photoshoot of hers.
“I think for a model the best thing is to be in a book or in the Pirelli calendar. It’s the only nice calendar,” said Italian model Bianca Balti. “In Italy there are so many vulgar calendars, like very sexy, but Pirelli is just about art and beauty.”
The calendar was unveiled last night at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow. It might have been a sub-freezing 3 degrees outside, but inside the guests looked stylishly unfazed. Standing out was the model Bianca Balti who wore a kimono-like Fendi Fall 2010 dress.
