Cerruti Spring 2011 Richard Nicoll
Richard Nicoll’s Cerruti Spring 2011 collection

I guess even the London based Richard Nicoll couldn’t save the dying Italian label Cerruti. It was just announced that Cerruti will shut down it’s womenswear operations and focus solely on menswear. So decided the new Cerruti owners – Li & Fung group – who purchased the label in December.

“We prefer not to spread ourselves too thin in a field that is highly competitive,” Cerruti’s CEO, Florent Perrichon, told WWD.

Cerruti has been in trouble for quite some time. Every since Nino Cerruti’s retirement in 1996, the label has been changing head designers and owners quite frequently, with Narciso Rodriguez and Jean-Paul Knott being among them. Richard Nicoll is the current womenswear creative director for Cerruti. Having signed on for three seasons, he will show his third and final Cerruti collection in March. The most recent Cerruti Spring 2011 collection was a stunning marriage of sportswear and chic, so I’m quite looking forward to seeing Nicoll’s final Fall 2011 collection for the brand. Will it be a presentation or a full runway show remains to be seen.
